The collision occurred at approximately 1:40 p.m. local time at the corner of Campbell Parade and Beach Road. Emergency services attended the scene after a white Lexus struck the popular gelato store, causing significant damage to the storefront and vehicle.
New South Wales Police and ambulance paramedics responded to the incident and provided emergency medical assistance to the driver.
The man was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital in critical condition but later died despite efforts to save him.
Police said preliminary inquiries suggested the driver may have suffered a medical episode before the crash. Investigators have not yet established the full sequence of events leading to the collision.
The impact caused considerable damage to the front of the Luca and Luca Gelato shop. Broken chairs and other belongings were scattered across the pavement as emergency crews worked at the scene.
A resident living in the building above the shop told local media that she heard screams and a loud crash, describing the incident as frightening.
Fortunately, initial police reports indicated that no other injuries had been reported.
Officers attached to the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command attended the scene alongside NSW Ambulance personnel.
Police established traffic diversions around the affected intersection and urged motorists to avoid the area while emergency services carried out their work.
Authorities confirmed that a report would be prepared for the Coroner. The investigation is expected to help establish the circumstances surrounding the collision, including whether a medical emergency contributed to the crash.
The incident has brought attention to the dangers that can arise when a vehicle unexpectedly leaves the roadway, particularly in busy commercial areas where pedestrians and customers may be nearby.
While the driver’s death has been confirmed, investigators have not publicly established a definitive cause for the collision. Further details are expected as police inquiries continue.
