Rj Mitte Death: ‘Breaking Bad’ Star Dies at 34 as Hollywood Mourns Actor and Disability Rights Advocate

American actor RJ Mitte, best known for portraying Walter “Flynn” White Jr. in the acclaimed television drama Breaking Bad, has died at the age of 34, prompting an outpouring of grief from fans, colleagues and members of the entertainment industry.

Mitte’s representatives confirmed his death on Monday, October 12, describing him as a beloved actor, philanthropist and passionate advocate for disability rights. Authorities reported that he died in Brownsville, Texas.

Mitte rose to international prominence through his portrayal of Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s character, Walter White, in the award-winning AMC series Breaking Bad.

The drama, which aired from 2008 to 2013, followed a high school chemistry teacher who becomes involved in the illegal drug trade. Mitte appeared throughout the show’s five-season run, delivering a performance that helped bring greater visibility to disability representation on mainstream television.

Like the character he portrayed, Mitte lived with cerebral palsy. He drew on aspects of his own experience to bring authenticity to the role, helping audiences engage with a character whose story extended beyond his disability.

Away from the screen, Mitte became an advocate for greater opportunities and more authentic representation of people with disabilities in the entertainment industry.

He worked with disability-focused organisations, including United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and supported philanthropic initiatives through the Mitte Foundation.

His career also included appearances in the television series Switched at Birth and The Guardians of Justice, alongside roles in independent films. In 2021, he starred in Triumph, a coming-of-age drama featuring a high school wrestler with cerebral palsy.

Mitte continued working in entertainment in the months leading up to his death. Reports said he had recently attended a screening of Talking to Strangers and appeared publicly at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta in early October.

News reports published on October 13 included conflicting levels of detail about the circumstances surrounding Mitte’s death. While some outlets reported suicide, the Associated Press reported that the justice of the peace who confirmed his death could not initially provide a cause and said an autopsy would be performed. The investigation and official findings should therefore be distinguished from individual media reports.

Mitte’s impact reached beyond his best-known role. Through his acting and advocacy, he challenged stereotypes about disability and helped encourage conversations about inclusion in film and television.

His death at 34 marks a profound loss for those who admired his work and the causes he championed. His performances, public advocacy and efforts to widen opportunities for people with disabilities remain an important part of his legacy.
